I feel like I've seen several movies about night hags in the last couple years. Some are better than others, and Mara sits right in the middle. It's not terrible, but it's not that good either.
The movie truly oscillates between "that was neat" and "that's kinda lame", but never to any sort of extreme. I would find myself starting to become distracted or bored, then something interesting would happen, and I'd be intent for a little while longer.
Very little new ground is discovered here, but that also means there's a safe sense of familiarity. There's a scene involving eyelids that I really enjoyed, but it wasn't even at the climax, so it's not like it saved the movie or anything. The reason behind how the mara was choosing her victims didn't do much for me, and almost felt like it was tacked on. Crammed onto existing mythology in an attempt to make the demon defeatable.
The end was actually pretty good, but it's a bit of a journey to get there.
If you're just looking for something to kill time, or to munch popcorn with someone, Mara fits the bill. But it probably won't stay with you, and you definitely aren't missing out if you never watch it.
